The macOS operating system is famous for its convenience and thoughtfulness to the smallest detail. One of these little things are keyboard shortcuts and special actions.
Now we’ll tell you how to use the single Option (Alt) key to get more than 20 additional chips when working with a Mac.
They collected them by tasks, so do not be surprised that there will be 10 points. But the teams themselves are 20.
1. Open new items in the menu bar
Almost any element of the menu bar will display additional actions if you click on it with the Option key held down .
▸ for the volume indicator , a menu for selecting input sources opens to switch between the built-in microphone on the computer and the microphone on the wireless headset.

3. Turn off and restart the Mac without a timer
When trying to turn off or restart the computer from the menu bar, the user is faced with a dialog box that asks you to open the running application after the next system start.
You must either confirm the action or wait 60 seconds to automatically close the dialog box.
If you hold down the Option key before shutting down or rebooting, the dialog box will not be displayed.
4. Cut files when copying
Users who switched to Mac from Windows computers have been trying for a long time to find an analogue of the Control + X hotkey for cutting a file with further movement.
On macOS, this feature works a little differently. First copy data using a combination of Command + C , and insertion site for copying data press Command + V , and to transfer Command Option + V + .
5. Copy the path to the file
If you try to crank this trick before copying and press Command + Option + C , then not the file itself, but the path to it will be placed on the clipboard.
Sometimes it is very useful.
6. Delete files past the recycle bin
We pump some more known shortcuts:
▸ use Command + Backspace to delete the selected data to the recycle bin, and Command + Option + Backspace to permanently delete past the recycle bin.
▸ use Command + Shift + Backspace to empty the basket, and Command + Shift + Option + Backspace to empty the basket without a confirmation menu.
7. Change the direction of rotation for the image
In the View or Finder application, there is a button for quickly rotating a photo 90 degrees counterclockwise. If you need to rotate the photo once clockwise, you have to rotate it left three times.
We hold down the Option key and the direction of rotation changes to the opposite.
8. Change the default applications for files
To open a file in a specific program, we call its context menu and select the program in the Open section in the application .
If you hold down the Option key, the item changes its name to Always open in the application .
This will quickly change the default program for any type of file.
9. We work with text faster
When working in text editors, standard and third-party applications for working with text or browsers, the Option key will help speed up the process.
▸ Option + arrows allow you to move the cursor over words.
▸ Option + Shift + arrows lead to quick selection of words.
▸ Option + Backspace allows you to delete entire words.
10. Turn on the slide show
When you select multiple photos, you can quickly view them in a standard Mac viewer.
To do this, you just need to add the Option key to the already familiar Space key. In this case, Option + Space shortcut will start a full-blooded slide show.
Now you know how much the Option (Alt) key is needed and useful on macOS. Feel free to experiment and click on it in other menus or applications for more options.
