Baby Shark’s video overtook Despacito in views to become the most watched video on YouTube

The video has been watched over seven billion times.

The music video for the children’s song Baby Shark, filmed by the educational South Korean brand Pinkfong, has become the most watched video on YouTube. It amassed 7.04 billion views and surpassed the previous leader, a video for the song Despacito by Puerto Rican singer Luis Fonsi. This was reported by The Guardian.

The video was uploaded to the service in June 2016. The song’s author is unknown and became a worldwide hit when it was recorded by 10-year-old Korean-American singer Hope Segoyne. Pinkfong then made a dance move video for the song.

The video first went viral in Southeast Asia, and then in the United States and Europe. It peaked at number six on the UK singles chart and number 32 in the United States. Based on the video, Pinkfong released souvenirs and books, and many covers appeared, including those from Luis Fonsi. Another video taught children how to wash their hands during a pandemic, and for Halloween they released a clip about a zombie shark.


The song is in the public domain and not owned by Pinkfong, but children’s songwriter Jonathan Wright sued the company in 2019. He claims to have recorded a similar song in 2011 and that he has rights to it.

In October, three prison workers in Oklahoma were charged with mistreating prisoners. The guards allegedly handcuffed them and forced them to listen to Baby Shark for two hours without interruption.
