Surface Duo runs on Android and will be out before the end of 2020.

An eyewitness filmed a foldable Microsoft Surface Duo smartphone in the Vancouver metro, Canada.

In the video, the owner uses the device in folded and unfolded states – the hinges allow the device to be folded both with screens outward and inward.

Surface Duo is equipped with two 5.6-inch screens and runs a modified Android OS. The system is adapted to work with multiple displays and ergonomically distributes open applications between them.

Microsoft previously released a device emulator and developer instructions. By default, all windows open on one screen. But Microsoft allows the ability to deploy apps and pictures in a variety of ways:

  • the image is stretched over 2 screens;
  • the left screen displays the main elements of the list, and the right one opens details;
  • different pages of one document are displayed on the screens;
  • pictures and text are split into different screens;
  • auxiliary interface elements are displayed on the right screen.

Designer Jonas Deinert visualized Microsoft’s guidelines and explanations in a 3D video.

We have previously explored how Microsoft’s launcher and other ecosystem apps work on regular Android smartphones.

We will be happy to hear your thoughts
