Engineers came up with a “focusless” camera with a flat lens

Engineers from the University of Utah have developed a technology that will significantly reduce the size of the cameras of mobile devices, medical and special applications. The basis of the new type of cameras may be a flat lens, which can replace a set of ordinary optical lenses, which take up a lot of space.

The only lens of this kind is able to provide focus for all objects in the frame at the same time. The lens uses a “nanostructure”, which replaces a set of traditional lenses in the same smartphones.

So far, the camera is only a concept and works at low aperture values in the infrared range. In the future, engineers intend to increase the number of apertures and “get out” in the visible spectrum.
