Is there life without Google? Honest review of Huawei Mate 30 Pro

Nevertheless, we could not leave you without an honest review of the flagship news. Onliner is ready to introduce you to the Mate 30 Pro closer. Next – as always, an impartial review of the smartphone. A good apparatus, albeit not by 9 points.

To be or not to be?

You know that Huawei last year fell under US sanctions. The consequence of this, among other things, was a ban on the use of Google services in smartphones of the Chinese manufacturer. Old devices decided not to touch – Huawei P30 and P30 Pro will continue to work as if nothing had happened, but newer models come out without a pre-installed Google Play, without YouTube, Gmail and other familiar applications. Android still plays the role of the operating system, but the experience of its use is changing radically. Hedgehog is clear: so far, everything is not very good.

If for some reason you are holding the Huawei Mate 30 Pro, you have two ways. We call them this: the path of a law-abiding citizen and the path of a pirate. In the first case, you refuse Google services and put what is in the Huawei App Gallery app store. By the way, so that you appreciate the depth of the Chinese fall: when you start this store, you will periodically see ads from third-party applications and services. It’s just as ridiculous as banner ads on the keyboard of HTC smartphones, only in the case of Huawei it is done intentionally, and not by accident. So, the first way will allow you to install the services of Yandex, Viber and TikTok, but you will not receive any Instagram, Facebook, Telegram, or even WhatsApp. If necessary, you will have to download distributions from third-party sites – not a very convenient option, but working.

The second way involves installing Google services. The most obvious way (downloading the APK of the Google Play app and installing it on your smartphone) does not work. Rather, the application simply does not open after installation. I tried earlier versions – the result is the same. But just the other day, users have discovered a new effective way to install Play. They write that the Chat Partner application is able to help make Google services friends with Huawei smartphones. However, there is no guarantee that all this will not crash during the next firmware update or will not be disabled by Google itself.

Aesthetic but not practical

Mate 30 exists in two versions: regular and Pro. They differ much more than can be assumed. The usual Mate 30 has a flat screen, a small cutout for front cameras and a mini-jack in stock. Well, the Huawei Mate 30 Pro is characterized by a curved screen, which creates a feeling of framelessness, a missing mini-jack and a more pronounced “bang” in front. Taking the smartphone in hand, it is difficult to get rid of the feeling that Huawei is struggling to be like Samsung. Frankly speaking, this is not a bad example to follow, but you can’t expect secondary design in a smartphone for more than a thousand euros.

The screen itself is gorgeous: an AMOLED matrix, a diagonal of 6.53 inches, a resolution of 1176 × 2400 pixels – and all this occupies 94% of the front panel. In addition, the display is perfectly calibrated and supports the HDR10 extended color range mode.

However, there is one “but” that crosses out all the advantages of this screen. Huawei designers were so carried away by bending the matrix to the side faces that they had to abandon the volume buttons. Now the sound is adjusted by the slider that appears on the screen after double-tapping on the left or right sidewall (this is set during the initial setup of the smartphone). It would seem that it’s okay, you just can’t do it blindly during a conversation.

And it seems that the Mate 30 Pro looks good, but the same P30 is perceived somehow more coherently. It seems that the specialists of the Huawei design department wanted to do something unusual, but did not realize what exactly they were doing it for.

Shooting is a pleasure

The only thing that does not cause any complaints and is generally pleasing is the built-in cameras, although Huawei tried to emphasize that the flagship in terms of photo and video capabilities is still the P30. The Mate 30 Pro uses a four-camera system.

The main module uses a 40-megapixel Quad Bayer sensor, a lens with an equivalent focal length of 27 millimeters and an aperture of F1.7, as well as phase autofocus and optical stabilization. The ultra-wide-angle camera uses a sensor close in characteristics (the same resolution, the same arrangement of sensitive elements), but the lens is wider – 18 millimeters in equivalent and aperture F1.8.

Interestingly, this camera is also used for shooting video. The third camera acts as a telephoto lens, and switching to it provides a triple optical zoom. The characteristics are as follows: 8 megapixels, 80 millimeters in equivalent, aperture F2.4, phase autofocus, optical stabilization. Well, the role of the fourth camera is the depth sensor, which is used in portrait mode. You cannot switch to it as a separate camera.

The shooting quality is expectedly high: the main camera behaves in much the same way as in the Huawei P30. But this is not surprising. The wide-angle lens is also quite good, although its viewing angle is not as wide as on the iPhone 11 Pro and Pro Max. But the resolution is higher.

Speaking of permission. Despite the fact that 40 megapixels are declared for cameras, by default, the smartphone takes photos in a resolution of 10 megapixels. This is quite enough for viewing on a smartphone screen and even on a large TV, but if you want to use the device at full power, do not be too lazy to look into the settings and install the coveted 40 megapixels. There will be no noticeable increase in quality, but you can print the resulting photo on a billboard. In addition to jokes.

Video can be recorded in 4K resolution at 60 frames per second with HDR. The ultra-wide-angle camera, which is used to shoot video, offers only digital stabilization, but it works great. And when switching to other lenses, the optical stabilizer is automatically activated. The picture quality is high, the sound is also recorded well – in a word, Huawei is in all its glory. Separately, it is worth noting the possibility of accelerated shooting with a frequency of 960 frames per second in Full HD resolution and 7680 frames per second in HD resolution. The only thing that is not very pleasing is the lack of the ability to select a slow-motion fragment manually. But you could do it like on the iPhone!

Powerful and long

Already something, but the performance of modern smartphones (especially top-end ones) is still sufficient with a large margin. Although the Kirin 990 chip cannot boast of a leading position in synthetic benchmarks, you definitely won’t have to worry about the lack of power for a very long time. 8 GB of RAM also seem overkill, but what to do if these are the trends.

Charging at 4500 mAh in a quiet everyday use will give you the opportunity to charge the phone no more than once every two days. Fast, wireless and reverse charging are supported – everything is familiar and good here.

What is the result?

Do not worry, Huawei will be fine. The company received $ 80 billion from the state to overcome difficulties, and this is just to be transferred to the open. Knowing the features of doing business in China, we can assume that the good gesture of the Communist Party was not limited to this. Perhaps the company has new government contracts worth billions of dollars without tenders, tax breaks and other unobvious things. But these are trifles, the main thing is to shout loudly about unfair competition at presentations and sales starts.

As for the Huawei Mate 30 Pro , no matter how good this smartphone is from a hardware point of view, its example clearly shows that living without Google services is extremely difficult. Anyone who dares to buy this device now dooms itself to an eternal struggle with common sense. You’ll have to constantly look for new ways to install Google Play, regularly communicate in forums with colleagues in misfortune, and update the applications manually from time to time, downloading APK files from dumb sites hung with banner ads. But why all this is needed in a smartphone for immodest Rs 5,029-7000 ?

7.5 Total Score
Egadget Rating

The Mate 30 Pro is technically good, but not without its flaws. An overly curved display does not add convenience anyway, and the lack of hardware volume buttons really looks like a mockery. The sub-screen fingerprint scanner is still practically useless, as are fictional chips with contactless scrolling of pages and menus. The situation with many missing applications does not add charm to the phone.

  • Powerful hardware platform
  • Autonomy
  • Cameras
  • Faster shooting
  • Lack of Google services
  • No volume buttons
  • High (almost horse) price
