This will increase sales of wireless AirPods.
In autumn 2020, Apple may abandon the wired EarPods bundled with the iPhone. Thus, the company allegedly plans to stimulate demand for wireless AirPods, which are sold separately. This was reported by analyst Min-Chi Kuo.
According to an analyst at TF International Securities, the abandonment of wired headphones will cause a serious increase in demand for AirPods. At the same time, Kuo did not specify whether Apple would cease to put the headphones in the kit or refuse them for good.
The analyst noted that demand for AirPods could also grow due to special promotions in the second half of the year. At the same time, Kuo estimates that in the second quarter of the year, due to the global pandemic, AirPods shipments will be the lowest: shipments decreased by 29% compared to the previous quarter to 17.2 million units. He believes that sales will recover in the third quarter, and demand will rise to 93.8 million pairs of headphones per year.
Kuo previously stated that Apple is working on the third generation of original AirPods, which will go into mass production in the first half of 2021. According to him, the new model will contain only internal improvements – the design will not change.
Kuo’s forecasts diverge from many other rumors in the media. For example, according to John Prosser, the third generation of AirPods is ready to launch “anytime.”
As the analyst explained, he is aware that the market is waiting for a new model of wireless headphones from Apple in the second half of the year. But Kuo believes that in the fall the company will release new headphones in the Beats lineup.
If Kuo’s forecast for wired EarPods comes true, then the new iPhones will be the first iPhones in history without complete headphones. Apple put the headphones in the kit with the iPhones from the very first model in 2007.
With the release of iPhone 5, Apple once changed the design of the headphones, and in 2016 they received a Lightning connector instead of a mini-jack.
