Pros and cons of Samsung Galaxy A20s and A30s models

The current era of consumption looks like an accelerated conveyor, which gives out new goods faster. The more there are, the more they are inconspicuous – people sometimes just do not have time to understand what is happening and why it is necessary to change only a purchased smartphone (we are talking about mobile phones now). Therefore, you have to study them almost with a magnifying glass, looking for differences – those that are important for the consumer, and not the marketing departments of companies.

In the spring of 2019, Samsung released the Galaxy A20 and A30 smartphones, which in the budget segment looked good compared to competitors (and without them). And in the fall there was a “continuation” – Galaxy A20s and A30s. Let’s see how they differ from their predecessors.

Galaxy A30s vs Galaxy A30

Let’s start with the older model – it catches the eye thanks to the “holographic” design. No, this is no more or less familiar gradient fill with overflows, but a “game on a theme”, which Samsung calls a “holographic print”.

The Galaxy A30s comes in three primary colors (black, white and purple), which are complemented by geometric shapes in the lower half of the back panel. They shimmer pretty.

The case, apparently, is plastic, but with a glossy finish that successfully simulates glass. If, as they say, “meet by clothes”, then the round is for the Galaxy A30s. A bit of tar – he collects prints and is easily soiled.

The next difference in terms of design was made by the triple camera (the Galaxy A30 had a dual camera). Samsung also got rid of the fingerprint scanner on the rear panel, integrating it into the screen – just like the flagship models.

The front side also barely noticeably changed: the usual “droplet” of the front camera became smoother (the company was nicknamed this design Infinity-V). Has it become more elegant? Depends on the point of view.

A30s Left A20s Right

The screen size remained the same – 6.4 inches, but the resolution of the OLED-matrix decreased from Full HD + to HD +. Probably, I had to go for it because of the scanner and the need to maintain an adequate (read – competitive) price. You can start peering at the pixels and blurry borders of the icons, but with a good price for the device, all these nuances will be excusable.

Smartphone Galaxy A30s received a 14-nm 8-core Exynos 7904 processor (versus Exynos 7885 in A30). There is 3 GB of RAM in the test instance, 32 GB of internal memory, of which just over 21 GB are available, which the manufacturer honestly reports on the site. Enough for basic needs, but current trends require more.

Performance did not become a strong point of the new product, but still slightly increased compared to its predecessor (if compared by the results of synthetic tests).

In “heavy” games fps subsidence is observed, but other applications run without brakes. In this regard, the Galaxy A30s added in comparison with the A30 (possibly, including due to lower screen resolution).

he on-screen fingerprint scanner works in 9 cases out of 10 – this is a high rate. With an inactive screen, however, it takes longer than if you put your finger after pressing the power button on the side.

The operation of the face scanner was optimized: in the dark, the smartphone now activates a brighter backlight to see the owner (the screen in this case flashes for a moment and, giving access, goes out). Complaints about its effectiveness did not appear, unlike the previous model.

The battery capacity remains the same – 4000 mAh, there is support for fast charging at 15 watts. We did not manage to land the battery completely in the available time, but the system will probably last no less – two days of work without fear of being cut off from the world. USB Type-C is used for connection.

Of the nice “goodies” – the ability to install two SIM-cards and a memory card. There is a 3.5 mm headphone jack and an NFC module (you can pay using Samsung Pay).

And finally, the camera. The Galaxy A30s is equipped with a triple camera in the layout of 25 (f / 1.7 and PDAF) + 8 (wide-angle, f / 2.2) + 5 (depth sensor) megapixels. The A30 had no depth sensor. Our opinion regarding the “width” remains the same: this module will be in demand just like the zoom – very little.

Assistance in shooting is provided by artificial intelligence, which selects the desired scene for the current conditions. When operating a wide-angle lens, the AI is not active. There is no optical stabilization, but in good light this is not very important.

The A30s camera leaves an ambiguous impression: without enlargement, the photos appear crisp, detailed and colorful. With the increase, it is clear how exactly the AI naughty. More often than not, he “shuffles” small elements, depriving the image of naturalness. In portrait shooting, “enhancers” are included in the case, noticeably smoothing the face. This is noticeable, again, with zoom.

The front camera is 16-megapixel, without “bells and whistles” in the form of image stabilization and autofocus.

Galaxy A30s is a budget smartphone that looks like a higher class mobile phone. Nevertheless, it does not create the impression of a cheap device. Performance is priced. The amount of internal memory of 32 GB seems insufficient by today's standards. But you can install a couple of SIM cards and microSD in addition. Smartphone price: 1,470 and 1,295 PKR for models with 64 and 32 GB, respectively.

Galaxy A20s vs Galaxy A20

Now compare the “old” Galaxy A20 with the new A20s.

This is a fairly massive smartphone, which is heavier than the Galaxy A30s and A20 (their weight is 183 and 169 grams, respectively).

Front models A20 and A20s do not differ (at least noticeably): the same framework, the “drop” of the front camera. The only change on the back is again a triple, not a dual camera. The fingerprint scanner remained in place. The existing claims have also survived – the scanner is located high, so people with small brushes will be uncomfortable to reach for it.

The same applies to the power button on the right sidewall – it is closer to the top, so you need to intercept the smartphone.

The cover is glossy and without frills in the form of “holographic prints.” Gloss collects fingerprints, but retains marketable appearance. In general, the A20s inherited almost all design elements from its predecessor.

Once again, Samsung is experimenting with screens. If OLED was installed in the A20, now IPS. And this is not a problem: in terms of brightness, such a display wins, although it loses colors in richness. The screen size has grown slightly (up to 6.5 inches), but the resolution has remained the same – it’s still the same HD + (720 × 1560 pixels).

The company installed its proprietary chip (Exynos 7884) in the previous mobile phone, while the new model has an octa-core 14-nm Snapdragon 450 with a clock frequency of up to 1.8 GHz. A20s also received 3 GB of RAM. After starting the synthetic tests, it seemed that the smartphone was hanging – the chip’s performance was barely enough to compute some tests.

But Samsung remained true to this in itself: that the past model, that the present – these are completely budget solutions for those who need a large screen, a camera and the ability to access the Internet. You’ll have to put up with the slowdowns in the interface when launching applications. Games are on (if you wait until they load), but it’s not always comfortable (but the “heavy ones” are tossing and turning, though the users who are accustomed to the top-end hardware may not have enough nerves). The face scanner works in the dark, but there is a delay before unlocking the screen.

The battery capacity in A20s is 4000 mAh, charging is via USB Type-C with support for 15 watts. Assume that in real conditions the battery lasts at least for the same two days of operation.
The smartphone is equipped with a fashionable three-chamber module, which differs from what its predecessor had by the presence of a depth sensor – now it is a layout from the usual 13-megapixel (f / 1.8, PDAF), wide-angle 8-megapixel (f / 2.2) and 5-megapixel ( f / 2.2). Selfie camera – 8 megapixel.

Taking pictures with the test A20s is not ice. Most likely, the problem is associated with the dampness of an instance that is not intended for sale. This is indicated by a striking difference from the pictures taken on the A30s. We will not upload all the photos, as there is no point in this.
