BlackBerry announced the termination of cooperation with TCL in the production of smartphones. This was reported on the organization’s twitter. Sales will end on August 31, 2020.

The company explained that despite the cessation of production, TCL will provide support for sold smartphones until August 31, 2022. The company did not specify whether it plans to continue the production of mobile devices in the future.

In December 2016, TCL acquired the rights to manufacture smartphones under the BlackBerry brand. New devices were released on the Android operating system.

In 2017, the company released the first joint product – BlackBerry KeyOne. Managers called it the launch of “unconditional success.” According to analyst Francisco Geronimo, over the year the company sold about 850 thousand smartphones. According to him, the share of the manufacturer in relation to large competitors amounted to “a percentage share”. Andy Rubin, Essential Phone company, which sells about 90 thousand devices, showed worse results.

Vlad Savov, editor of The Verge, noted that the main thing for the company’s management was not the number of sales, but their quality – direct sales to potential consumers. He also stressed that at that time, the main task for Blackberry was to change the way consumers think about the company, that it produces expensive smartphones without popular applications.

TCL has released just four BlackBerry smartphone models: KEYone, Motion, KEY2 and KEY2 LE. The latter was released at the end of 2018.
