The company’s first project will be an AAA game for the PS5 and Xbox Series X.
Tencent has announced that it will open a gaming studio called LightSpeed, which will be located in Los Angeles. It will be led by Steve Martin, a former Rockstar manager and producer who worked on Bully, GTA V and both parts of Red Dead Redemption.
Developers have already recruited to the American office – among them are former employees of Respawn, 2K Games, Insomniac and Rockstar. The team will focus on AAA projects for the upcoming generation of consoles – and the first of these will be some open-world game for the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X. Details about it are still unknown.
As analyst Daniel Ahmad noted on Twitter, it was LightSpeed Studio, which at that time had no official name, that introduced the Project SYN technodemo at the end of June. It is unclear whether this is the same project, but the game was described as an AAA shooter in the open world, the action of which takes place in a cyberpunk setting.
