According to director Kazui Ichikawa, the plot of The World Ends with You will be partially reworked in the anime series, but how it has not yet been announced.
The adaptation will also be brought into line with modern realities – for example, the main characters will use smartphones instead of clamshell phones, and the Tokyo area of Shibuya, in which The World Ends with You events unfold, will be depicted as it looks in 2020, and not how it looks was in the game in 2007.
The World Ends with You was released on the Nintendo DS portable console in July 2007 in Japan and in April 2008 in Russia. The game was developed by Square Enix and Jupiter Studio. In 2012, it was released on iOS, in 2014 on Android, and in 2018 on Nintendo Switch.
According to the plot of the original, the teenager Neku Sakuraba falls into a parallel world – the Underground, where he and his new friends have to participate in the Games of the Reapers to determine their future fate. The key items during the missions in the game were elements of the Japanese youth culture: clothing, food and mobile phones.
