Tokyo marathon organizers downsize due to Covid-19 coronavirus spread

Only professionals and people with disabilities will participate in the race.

The organizers of the Tokyo Marathon 2020 decided to reduce the number of participants due to the risk of the spread of the coronavirus Covid-19. This was reported on the organization’s website. Competitions will be held only for professionals and people with disabilities.

In total, 38 thousand athletes, including amateurs, were supposed to take part in the competitions. According to, now only 200 professional athletes will participate in the race. In addition, the organizers refused to return funds to amateurs who paid an entrance fee, but promised to send a gift t-shirt. Marathon runners paid about 10.5 thousand rubles each, and participants in the 10-kilometer race – 4 thousand each.

The organizers also emphasized that all registered participants will be able to participate in the Tokyo Marathon 2021. They noted that for this the runners will have to pay the registration fee. According to them, the situation may change in the future.

The Tokyo Marathon 2020 was due to take place March 1 in Tokyo, ahead of the 2020 Summer Olympics.
