What to expect from WWDC 2020: poppies on ARM, widgets on iOS and iMac in the design of iPad Pro

What is known about Apple’s largest developer conference, which will be held online for the first time.

On June 22, at eight in the evening Moscow time, Apple will hold a conference for WWDC 2020 developers. For the first time in history, the event will be held online because of the coronavirus pandemic, but Apple will still broadcast live from the Steve Jobs Theater, although there are no journalists in the hall.

WWDC 2020 is a conference for developers, so most of it will be devoted to software. Apple will traditionally introduce new versions of its operating systems iOS, iPadOS, macOS, watchOS and tvOS.

In addition, specialized media and bloggers expect iMac in a new design with thin frames, the announcement of the transition of Mac to ARM processors instead of Intel, and, possibly, something else. we talks about key expectations ahead of WWDC 2020.

iOS and iPadOS 14

In 2019, Apple split iOS and iPadOS into two different systems. They usually get the same basic functions, but in the OS for tablets, among other things, they add “desktop” features.

This time, quite a lot is known about the new versions of iOS and iPad OS: according to Vice, the early version of the system was sent to cybersecurity researchers and bloggers back in February. Some leaks from the iOS 14 code have already come true.

iPhone 9, the new iPad Pro, Apple Watch with sleep tracking, geo-tagging and AirPods overhead: what they found in iOS 14

According to 9to5Mac, who studied the codeiOS 14, one of the most noticeable changes will be the home screen. Applications can be formed in a list like on Apple Watch, users will also be able to sort them by the most used or by the number of unread notifications. This will allow you to see all applications on one screen, rather than flipping them with “pages”, as in iOS 13.

On the home screen in iOS 14, widgets may also appear that can be customized for themselves, but how exactly they will work is not yet clear. According to journalists, the developers will have access to a special framework that will allow you to display information from the application in real time directly to the screen without going to the application. The code in iOS betas have found references to the widgets for “smart” home.

Another major innovation will be the focus on augmented reality. Along with the system, Apple will release a new application for AR, which is still referred to as Gobi. The new platform will work with Apple’s branded QR codes and will allow you to learn about products in stores by pointing the camera at them instead of manually searching.

According to Bloomberg, in iOS 14, Apple will also for the first time allow changing standard applications to third-party ones. For example, Safari can be replaced with Chrome if desired, and Mail with Gmail. This will allow the company to avoid accusations from antitrust authorities and individual companies in different countries.

Other possible iOS innovations include mentions in Messages, translation functions in Safari, and the ability to open cars using an iPhone or Apple Watch through the new CarKey feature. Hearing impaired users will have the ability to convert sounds to Haptic Touch vibration feedback.

Apple also plans to release a dedicated training video training app. Its basic features will be free, but premium features may only be available by subscription.

About Exclusive Features iPadOS 14so far little is known. Industry-specific media expect that Apple will continue to work on “desktop” experience in the system, for example, adding support for Apple Pencil in browsers, including for handwriting in text fields. A special command may also appear to decrease and increase the brightness of the Magic Keyboard using the buttons. Journalists have no reliable data on other innovations.

As explained in Bloomberg, in iOS 14 Apple focused on performance and stability after the release of iOS 13 with a lot of bugs. The company also changed the system testing process: now it can disable and enable new functions in the system, based on their stability.

Journalists speculate that because of this, Apple will announce only part of the new features during the announcement of the first version of the system. The rest can be left for later iterations or even on iOS 15.

Presumably, the system should be released in September or October 2020. It will work on all devices running iOS 13.

macOS 10.16, watchOS 7, tvOS 14

Other new system versions for Apple devices are suspiciously less than usual. Journalists learned most of all about watchOS 7 with new health tracking features, parental mode, updated dials and a sleep tracking app.

In watchOS 7Sleep tracking using an Apple app will appear for the first time: previously, only third-party solutions could be used for this. It will be possible to set personal goals in the Health application on an iPhone, and over time, it will begin to send recommendations for improving sleep.

Parents will be able to limit the contact list and available music of the child on the watch, as well as get the opportunity to track what applications they use during the lessons. All users will be able to share their own dials, there will also be one new dial infograph with a tachometer.

For the first time, Apple Watch will be able to track blood oxygen levels – this indicator can prevent the risk of heart failure or breathing. But for the function to work, a new sensor may be required, so it can be announced later – with the release of a new version of the clock.

tvOS 14will also receive parental mode: owners of Apple TV and HomePod will be able to create separate accounts for children. In addition, the screen time function may appear in the system to track the usage time of the device.

Journalists also expect the ability to pin audio output to a specific device so that you don’t have to reconnect to wireless headphones each time. In addition, the system will have a new fitness application with training videos and the ability to change standard applications, like in the new iOS.

About new macOS version 10.16there were almost no leaks. Journalists are confident that the iMessage application ported to iOS through Catalyst compatibility technology, which was announced a year ago, will appear on the system.

The system can be called Mammoth, Monterey or Skyline: Apple has retained these trademarks since 2019. According to one version, she will receive the Big Sur prefix. Probably the main news about the system will be the abandonment of Intel processors in macbooks and the transition to the company’s own chips.

Mac switches to Apple’s proprietary processors

One of the most important announcements of the entire conference may be Apple’s refusal from Intel processors in favor of its own ARM-based developments in macbooks. Rumors about it go for about two years, but this time in a Bloomberg confident that everything will come to pass.

Bloomberg: Apple will abandon Intel and announce the transition to ARM processors in macbooks at WWDC 2020

According to reporters, Apple decided to switch to its own chips because of claims to the performance of Intel chips. Internal tests of the company showed that ARM is more efficient in graphics and tasks using neural networks, as well as more energy efficient.

By switching to its own development, Apple will be able to make chips to suit its requirements, regardless of the characteristics of a third-party product. The new processors use the same technology as iPhones with iPads, but Macs will continue to work on macOS.

The transition is announced much in advance so that the developers have time to prepare: the first devices on the ARM architecture will not be available until 2021. According to analyst Min-Chi Kuo, the first poppies on ARM will be the 13.3-inch Pro version and the new 24-inch iMac, they will be released in the fourth fiscal quarter – from January to March 2021.

If Apple announces the transition to ARM, this will be the first time in history that the company will make processors for its computers. Until the early 90’s, Apple used Motorola chips, then switched to PowerPC, and in 2005 changed its manufacturer to Intel.

iMac in a new design with a sophisticated frame

According to insider Sonny Dixon, Apple will show off at WWDC iMac in a new design similar to the iPad Pro. The all-in-one will become more similar to the Apple Pro Display XDR, it will receive only SSDs as the main drive and AMD Navi graphics card.

In addition to the 21.5- and 27-inch versions, Apple will also introduce a 23-inch iMac. All new devices can get Intel Comet Lake chips.

Other possible announcements

According to Bloomberg, blogger John Prosser and other relevant sources, there may be no hardware announcements at WWDC 2020. Nevertheless, as is known from previous leaks, the company has enough new products in stock: it can still show something at the conference.

Apple TV and HomePodshould get minor updates. The Apple prefix has not been updated since 2017, and now it will be equipped with at least the A12 processor, HDMI 2.1 and double the default storage capacity. The “smart” HomePod column should have a younger and cheaper version.

Journalists are also waiting for the announcementAirPods overhead, but the headphones are unlikely to show at WWDC – most likely they will be presented in September with new iPhones. According to leaks, they will have removable ear pads and tracking functions for removal from the head and neck.

The media also several times reported on the AirTags geo-tagging system, which will allow you to keep track of personal belongings. Her references were found in iOS in the summer of 2019, but they did not submit it for almost a year.
